Celebrated sci-fi novel The Day of the Triffids may be back on our screens again soon as news come through from Deadline that Mandate Pictures has bought the rights and it will be produced by Ghost House (the partnership between Mandate, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert). It’s also claimed the Evil Dead auteur wants to direct it too.

For those unfamiliar with the material, the original story follows a man who wakes up blindfolded in hospital who upon removing his bandages, realises that he is the only person who can actually see and that the earth has been taken over by ‘triffids’ – huge, venomous, plants that have the ability to walk and feed on human flesh.

If the film goes ahead, it will be the forth live-action version to be made. The first was a 60’s B-movie, and it’s also been made by the BBC twice now (a version which scared the hell out of me in the early 80’s, and a miniseries from late last year).
