Jake-Gyllenhaal-in-An-EnemyFollowing a brilliant performance in David Ayer’s acclaimed End of Watch last year, Jake Gyllenhaal is set to return to the big screen this year in the anticipated thriller, An Enemy.

Directed by the BAFTA-nominated Denis Villeneuve, the film sees Gyllenhaal take up a dual role as both Adam and Anthony. And now the first image of the actor, in both his roles, has been released by Pathé.

AN ENEMY is a mysterious thriller played out in the subconscious of a man in emotional crisis.

Gyllenhaal plays Adam, a teacher, living with his girlfriend Mary. He discovers a physically identical man, an actor called Anthony, living nearby with his wife, Helen. But are Adam and Anthony two men? Or does one only exist in the imagination of the other?

Gyllenhaal is joined by a strong cast, led by Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds), Sarah Gadon (Cosmopolis), and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet).

Villeneuve (Incendies) is directing from a script penned by Javier Gullón (Hierro), based on the original novel by José Saramago.

Gyllenhaal and Villeneuve are reuniting for their follow-up project, Prisoners, which is set to hit theatres in September, and will see Gyllenhaal starring opposite Hugh Jackman, Melissa Leo, Maria Bello, Paul Dano, Terrence Howard, and Viola Davis. Needless to say, that’s definitely another anticipated film from both the actor and director.

An Enemy currently remains without a release date, but we’re hoping that that will soon change, and that it will hit theatres before the year’s end. For now, here’s the first image from the film, giving us a look at Gyllenhaal in both of his leading roles.
