M. Night Shyamalan returns behind the camera this year to bring us After Earth, which is fast shaping up to be an epic action blockbuster this year.
Joseph Kosinski has done a brilliant job of creating a world in Oblivion, led by Tom Cruise, which has been topping box offices around the world this month. And it will be interesting to see how Shyamalan’s job, of creating a new world for these characters to inhabit, stacks up against that of Kosinski.
Sony released the first TV spot for their summer blockbuster earlier in the month. And now Yahoo Movies have debuted a longer spot, featuring more awesome footage.
After Earth is set 1000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.
Will Smith and Jaden Smith take the lead here as on-screen father and son. And starring alongside them will be Isabelle Fuhrman, Zoë Kravitz, and Sophie Okonedo.
Shyamalan is directing from a script he co-wrote with Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli), with the Oscar-nominated Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) hired to give it a polish.
After Earth will be released in the US on 31st May, with its Stateside release date brought forward by a week. And its UK release date remains the same, set for 7th June. For now, here’s the latest TV spot to get you in the mood.
