Jonny Lee Miller (Dark Shadows) and Lucy Liu (Kill Bill) star as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Joan Watson in CBS’ upcoming contemporary take on Sherlock Holmes, Elementary.

Not related to the BBC’s own Sherlock, the series will start airing on Thursday, 27th September across the Atlantic, and after debuting the first preview a few months back, three new images from the programme have made their way online.

“In a modern-day take on Sherlock Holmes, the iconic detective is taking on New York. Just out of rehab, he’s been assigned to live with his worst nightmare-sober coach, Dr. Joan Watson. Holmes’s unsurpassed skills of deduction and Watson’s medical expertise come together to create a dream team for solving the NYPD’s most impossible cases.”

Now, I know what you’ll be thinking:

a) There’s no way this is going to be as good as Sherlock

and/or b) They’ve turned Watson into a woman?

But Liu is undeniably a brilliant actress, and it could be interesting to see this kind of different approach to the Holmes stories.

Michael Cuesta, whose credits include Dexter, Six Feet Under, and the recent success story, Homeland, has directed the pilot, which is another reason to have a little faith.

Not to mention CBS is home to the likes of CSI, The Mentalist, The Good Wife, Person of Interest, How I Met Your Mother, and a host of other great programmes. So if your first reaction is outrage, I think we should at least wait for the pilot to see how it all turns out.

No word yet on when it will be coming to the UK, but Sky have picked the show up – alongside Arrow, another hot property coming out of the States at the moment – so we’ll hopefully be getting it later this year too. And in case you missed it, I’ve added the preview beneath. Enjoy.
