There are many good reasons why Cogan’s Trade is a film to be really looking forward to.

One: Brad Pitt stars in the lead.

Two: Pitt is reteaming with Andrew Dominik, the writer-director of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

Three: Its brilliant supporting cast includes the likes of James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, Bella Heathcote, and an actor I’m hoping will continue to rise in years to come, Scoot McNairy.

We got our first look at Pitt in the film back in May last year, and now we’ve got a few great new images to share with you, via KinoPoisk and Collider, in which we get to see Liotta, Jenkins, and Gandolfini along with more of Pitt.

Dominik has adapted the 1974 novel of the same name by George V. Higgins, and though the film’s official synopsis is still forthcoming, the novel’s looks a little like this, courtesy of Amazon:

“[Cogan’s Trade] tracks Jackie Cogan’s career in a gangland version of law and order. For Cogan is an enforcer; and when the Mob’s rules get broken, he gets hired to ply his trade — murder. In the gritty, tough-talking pages of Higgins’s 1974 national best-seller, Cogan is called in when a high-stake card game under the protection of the Mob is heisted. Expertly, with a ruthless businessman’s efficiency, a shrewd sense of other people’s weaknesses, and a style as cold as his stare, Cogan moves with reliable precision to restore the status quo as ill-conceived capers and double-dealing shenanigans erupt into high-voltage violence.”

Pitt will be taking the lead as Cogan for what has the potential to be one of the best crime-thrillers in years, and I think there’s every reason to be excited about it.

Dominik’s last film, The Assassination of Jesse James, was nominated for two Oscars a few years back, and I can’t wait to see what his return will bring us in Cogan’s Trade. Though there’s no word yet on when the film will be released, The Weinstein Company will hopefully be looking to have it released sometime before the year’s end. For now, here are the great new images, including a larger version of the first image we saw last year. As usual, you can click to enlarge.
