UPDATE: Piranha 3DD WILL Get a Theatical Release in the UK

Story below is now defunct

The $20 million-budgeted horror sequel, Piranha 3DD, has been pulled from its UK theatrical release and will instead go straight to DVD and Blu-ray, reports the British Video Association.

Piranha 3DD, which follows on from its 2010 predecessor, Piranha 3D, re-releases the pre-historic school of blood-thirsty piranhas who make their way into a newly opened waterpark. The film was set to be released in UK cinemas late last year, but Entertainment Film Distributors have now withdrawn the film from their cinema schedule and will release it straight to DVD and Blu-ray through their EV home entertainment arm.

Piranha 3D, a remake of Joe Dante’s cult ’70s exploitation horror, starred Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Ving Rhames and Christopher Lloyd fighting for survival after an underwater earthquake frees giant flesh-hungry fish during Spring break. Kelly Brook also appeared in the movie, dancing around in her bikini for a few hours and then stripped off for an underwater porn scene with Riley Steele.

Although the film went on to make a healthy £4,466,428 at the UK box office, it came under fire from James Cameron, who accused the remake of scraping “the bottom of the barrel”. Personally, I didn’t think it was actually that bad. As gruesome and unnecessarily boob-filled as it was, it was still actually quite entertaining to watch. To be honest though, I would definitely not have gone to see this sequel in the cinema, so this news is probably for the best.

Directed by John Gulager, Piranha 3DD sees Ving Rhames and Christopher Lloyd reprise their roles from the first film, and also includes the addition of Danielle Panabaker, Katrina Bowden, Chris Zylka, Gary Busey and David Hasselhoff who cameos as himself. The film will be available on DVD and Blu-ray from 19th March, 2012, and you can watch the trailer below:
