The first set of images of Alison Brie in the Netflix all-female wrestling comedy G.L.O.W. have been released and they look as if they could fit in well with a version of the 80’s classic Flashdance. Legwarmers, leotards and all.

The ten-episode series, which premieres on Netflix on June 23rd, is the brainchild of Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan and stars Alison Brie (Sleeping with Other People, Mad Men) as Ruth Wilder, a struggling and out-of-work actress who eventually goes on to create the first-ever women’s wrestling TV show.

The seven images spray the 80’s right in your face, with hiked-up leotards that leave very little to the imagination, wildly bad hair, a classic VW golf convertible for you classic car lovers and an array of different women of all shapes, sizes and creed getting ready for battle at the ring of the ding ding ding bell.

GLOW Announcement Trailer

During the latter part of the 80’s there was an actual series GLOW, which stands for Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, lead with Colourful characters, strong women, and over-the-top comedy sketches with its participants being mostly actresses, models, dancers, and/or stunt women hoping to get into show business through wrestling and saw Jackie Stallone (Sylvester Stallone’s mother) as the figurehead, This is where Kohan’s new creation takes its inspiration.

The cast also includes Marc Maron and Betty Gilpin. Maron plays a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women. Gilpin plays a former soap actress who left show business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work. Nurse Jackie Producers, Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch serve as co-showrunners.

If the plot of the original series is another to go by, this version of the nostalgia-filled trip will be something quite unique.
