Despite the controversy that has surrounded him in the last decade or so, it seems Mel Gibson is well and truly on the comeback trail in Hollywood. His latest film, Hacksaw Ridge, has been a big success across the globe and was rewarded last week with an Academy Award nomination for Best Director alongside his star Andrew Garfield, nominated for Best Actor (read our review here).

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg - Daddy's Home

Now it seems Gibson could be about the jump back in front of the camera if new rumours are to be believed. Deadline is reporting that the Braveheart star is being courted for a role in the upcoming comedy sequel Daddy’s Home 2, which would see him star alongside the returning duo of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, reprising their roles as Brad and Dusty respectively.

Indeed Gibson isn’t the only award-season favourite wanted for the film as The Crown and 3rd Rock from the Sun star John Lithgow is also set to be in the mix for the film. The actor, who recently won a SAG award for his role as Winston Churchill in the hit Netflix show, and Gibson would reportedly play the fathers of Ferrell and Walhberg for the sequel.

The first film, released in December 2015, saw Ferrell and Wahlberg team-up again after 2011’s The Other Guys as rival fathers vying for their children’s affection. It proved a huge success with the film grossing over $240million worldwide and was Ferrell’s biggest hit since Elf.

There’s nothing official forthcoming just yet, but Paramount are eyeing are start very soon on the sequel with a November 18th release date eyed. Original director Sean Anders is also set to return. Be sure to check back soon for any official announcements as we get them.
