G.I. Joe: Retaliation was a definite improvement on the disappointing first instalment, and a $375 million box office haul resulted in a third part being given the green light shortly after the movie’s release back in 2013.

Jon M. Chu won’t be returning to direct the next G.I. Joe movie, and so Eagle Eye and I Am Number Four helmer D.J. Caruso is now in early talks to take over the franchise. He’s recently finished shooting The Disappointments Room, a movie penned by Wentworth Miller starring Kate Beckinsale and Lucas Till.

Chu was attached for some time, but moved on to direct the Jem and the Holograms movie. Casino Royale and Green Lantern’s Martin Campbell was mentioned as being in the running last year, but nothing came of those meetings apparently. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is returning to produce with Hasbro’s Brian Goldner.

According to this latest report, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is still attached to star, and the threequel will focus on his character from G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Roadblock. There’s currently no word on a release date.

The story direction of G.I. Joe remains to be seen, but we recently came up with an idea of our own in a look at some crazy movie crossovers we’d like to see on the big screen. You can check that out by clicking here!
