Following last night’s dramatic series two finale, ITV has confirmed that Broadchurch will return for a third series with stars David Tennant and Olivia Colman set to reprise their roles as Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller.

There was quite a gap between the first and second batch of episodes, so a return date has not been confirmed as of yet. We do however know that writer Chris Chibnall will be back for series three as well.

“Chris Chibnall knows exactly how to keep viewers guessing and I’m delighted that he is going to take the story onto the next stage,” ITV’s director of drama Steve November said in a statement released last night.

“We’ve been overwhelmed that nine million people every week have continued to join us on the twists and turns of Broadchurch,” adds Chibnall. “This third chapter has been a glint in my eye for a long time and I’m thrilled to be writing these characters once again.” The Tweet announcing the news can also be seen below.

Reviews for series two of Broadchurch have been mostly very positive, even if it hasn’t got the nation talking as much as the first did. Ratings have still been huge though, so it’s no real surprise that it will return!
