It has been announced that FOX has given the green light for an eleventh season of The X-Files after its tenth season premiered last year. This was fourteen years after the ninth season ended back in May 2002 and seven years after the film The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

Even though season ten met with a mixed reception from critics, the return of such an iconic show drew in a staggering sixteen million viewers. Fox, buoyed by the popularity, commissioned an extra four episodes with season ten taking the episode count up to ten. Clearly they are pretty confident they have another smash hit series on their hands when the show is due to air later on this year.

The X-Files Season 11

In a statement from David Madden, President of Fox Broadcasting Company, he stated “Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why ‘The X-Files’ has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continues to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of ‘The X-Files’.”

The statement confirms that season ten creator and executive producer Chris Carter will be returning along with the show’s stalwarts David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Agents Mulder and Scully. This outing looks set to be a quick turnaround as production doesn’t actually begin until Summer, so the editing team have a hard slog to turn this one around before it’s due to air.
