This is one comic book film that doesn’t revolve around super serums, gamma rays or the stolid ambitions of a billionaire with a grudge. Instead we’ve got a misanthropic man who finds out he has a teenage daughter he never knew existed. The only powers he possesses include an almost total lack of tact, and a willingness to say whatever is on his mind, blind to the feelings of others. This is Wilson.

Based on the 2010 Daniel Clowes graphic novel, director Craig Johnson has enlisted Woody Harrelson (soon to be mentor to the iconic sci-fi character Han Solo in the new Star Wars spin off movie) as the emotional sledgehammer that is the title character. Laura Dern, shortly to be seen in season 3 of Twin Peaks (and another soon-to-be Star Wars actor) plays Wilson’s estranged wife and mother to his daughter.

Spider-Man Homecoming actress Isabella Amara plays the daughter, and will need to be the quiet emotional heart of the film if the scattergun insults and over-honest ebullience of Harrelson and Dern is to hit home. We’ve already seen a foul-mouthed and very funny red band trailer for the film, and now we have another, just as funny look at the film.

The film will have its debut at Sundance Film Festival out in Park City on the 22nd of January, with a wide release across the US on the 24th of March. No UK release date is set yet, we’ll let you know when you can enjoy this one.

Wilson Movie Synopsis

Harrelson stars as Wilson, a lonely, neurotic and hilariously honest middle-aged misanthrope who reunites with his estranged wife (Laura Dern) and gets a shot at happiness when he learns he has a teenage daughter (Isabella Amara) he has never met. In his uniquely outrageous and slightly twisted way, he sets out to connect with her.
