The first two action blockbusters in the series took $275m. and $312m. in 2010 and 2012, and smart money says that The Expendables 3 would be another big success at the box office.
Casting is still underway for the sequel, with Stallone confirming last month that Steven Seagal wouldn’t be in it, but that he still had hopes for Jackie Chan to come on board.
And now Stallone looks to have implied that Wesley Snipes for boarding The Expendables 3, welcoming him back after life in prison:
@TheSlyStallone Wesley Snipes is BACK!!!! … …with US.
Stallone has also recently been musing the idea of Mel Gibson taking to the helm for the sequel. And whilst it seems like it’s just thinking out loud (or rather, on Twitter), it’s an interesting idea to consider.
Stallone is writing the script, with much of the cast expected to return once more for the third outing.
Nicolas Cage boarded the project last summer as the first newcomer to the franchise. And Stallone is expected to be bringing a lot of young blood on board, to star alongside the classic heavyweight names we’ve seen in the first two films.
No word as of yet as to when we can expect it to hit theatres. But if all goes well with the script, and filming gets underway before the year’s end, I think a Summer 2014 blockbuster slot wouldn’t be out of the question.
