Alex-Tse-to-write-Gran-TurismoAfter making a name for himself adapting Watchmen for the big screen for Zack Snyder, Alex Tse is now setting his sights on another adaptation, but this time starting from a very different medium.

THR reports that Tse has been hired by Sony to pen the script for the movie adaptation of their hugely popular video game franchise, Gran Turismo, which has been in development for a few years now.

Michael De Luca, Kevin Spacey, and Dana Brunetti, the team behind the studio’s Oscar-hopeful Captain Phillps, will be producing the adaptation.

Since co-writing Watchmen, Tse has been busy working on the long-gestating remake of The Crow and the live-action adaptation of Ninja Scroll.

He’s also penned the script for Paramount and Bad Robot’s upcoming Battling Boy, the adaptation of Paul Pope’s graphic novel, released last month, and is now set to work on a rewrite for Summit’s Highlander remake.

Needless to say, he is clearly a sought-after writer, and whilst Watchmen’s source material may have had a more obvious calling for the cinematic treatment, Sony must be enthusiastic about Tse’s take on Gran Turismo to bring him on board.

Plot details are officially being kept under wraps, but Brunetti recently spoke about the story to Collider, revealing that the plan is to make a “wish-fulfillment fantasy that this kid plays this video game and ultimately goes from this video game to actually racing the race cars.”

The project follows somewhat in the footsteps of DreamWorks’ decision to bring Need for Speed to the big screen next year. There’s been a lot of negativity surrounding that adaptation, but the first two trailers have been very promising, so here’s to hoping that Tse will bring something with that kind of potential to the table.
