The Walking Dead returns to AMC this Sunday (it will air on UK Sky channel Fox the following night), and the American cable network have today announced that the show will return in 2015 for a sixth season.

It’s the most highly rated show in cable television history and frequently breaks ratings records.

For that reason, a renewal before even a single episode of The Walking Dead’s fifth season has aired isn’t really a major surprise. It will make fans of the show very happy though as it’s clearly not going anywhere anytime soon. A spin-off is also in the works, and you can find details on that by clicking here.

“We could not be more excited for October 12th as we share new episodes of ‘The Walking Dead’ with fans around the globe,” said AMC President Charlie Collier. “In advance of Sunday’s season five premiere, AMC proudly confirms a sixth season order of this extraordinary series. Thank you to Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, the terrific executive producers, and the entire team who brings this compelling world and these rich characters to life. There’s plenty more Dead ahead thanks to their impressive, collective effort.”

The press release which announced that The Walking Dead will return for a sixth season goes into detail about the huge social media buzz which frequently surrounds the comic book adaptation, while also confirming that Scott M. Gimple will return as the series’ showrunner and executive producer along with executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse.

The Walking Dead is one of only a handful of shows which airs within 24 hours of being shown in the US, something which helps avoid piracy and makes the show a worldwide phenomenon! We recently took a closer look at some of the things we would like to see in the fifth season, and you can find that here.
