When someone thinks of a ‘Sundance movie,’ many things might come to mind: perhaps a story that tugs at your heartstrings and leaves you feeling like you have been hit by a truck, or maybe a documentary that stirs your soul and inspires you to make a life-changing decision. James Sweeney’s Twinless was one of my favorite kind of ‘Sundance movies’— one that defies expectations and delivers something truly unique and unforgettable.

Writer/Director/Actor James Sweeney does it all in his second feature, and Sundance debut Twinless. The film follows Roman as he grapples with the tragic loss of his twin brother, Rocky. Dylan O’Brien delivers a standout performance as the heartbroken Roman, channeling his grief, anger, and pain into a deeply moving performance.

Roman joins a support group for twins who have lost their siblings, where they share their stories and provide comfort to one another. It’s here he meets Dennis, played by James Sweeney. The two quickly form a strong bond, becoming close friends and each other’s support system.

What begins as a buddy-comedy turns into something you couldn’t possibly predict.

Out of respect for the reader’s maximum entertainment value, I shall refrain from giving any other details. This is precisely why the Sundance Film Festival is the best filmgoing experience in the world.

There’s nothing quite like watching a movie with little to no knowledge of its plot, subject matter, or even genre. Without expectations of a surprising twist or knowing whether it will make you laugh or cry you approach it with a completely blank slate. This openness allows you to be fully immersed in the journey, taking you to places you might never have imagined

Twinless started as one thing became another thing and ended in a place I could have never guessed.

Dylan O’Brien is an absolute star playing the most demanding role of his career. He makes you laugh, he makes you cry, and he carries the film on his back with his depiction of grief and perseverance. The film would not work without him.

James Sweeney proves to be a remarkable talent in both writing and direction. His script is sharp, hilarious, and refreshingly innovative, crafting a film that is as entertaining and well-paced as any you’ll find at Sundance. As Dennis, Sweeney delivers a standout performance, bringing to life a character that is incredibly layered and endlessly captivating.

Unfortunately, the film unravels a bit in its third act. This is a common problem of high-concept films that have such a promising premise and twist. The film absolutely nails the takeoff and ride, but it just has a very tough time with the landing.

Despite that, Twinless still leaves an impact on the viewer. It is clear Sweeney has an inventive and singular voice in his writing that should lead to many great future products. But this film will be known as a launching point for O’Brien.
