2. John Macreedy – Bad Day At Black Rock
A little left-field this one, but Spencer Tracy eschews here his usual quiet dignity in favour of quiet dignity and some unexpected martial arts skills. He has arrived in a quiet town with an agenda that the locals seem very keen to thwart and although he looks old and doddery (and is also missing a hand) this belies some pretty impressive fighting skills which are suddenly unleashed when one of the locals transitions from obstructive to aggressive and winds up on backside for his trouble.
Tracy always had a strength of character about him and films like Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner played to that nicely, which made his sudden and unexpected Badassery all the more delightful. Top marks.
