Evil Dead – April 5th (US), 19th April (UK)
Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead has been garnering substantial critical acclaim in recent weeks, since its debut at SXSW last month. It’s not often that we see a horror movie get the favour of critics, and even less often when it’s a remake.
But it looks as though Alvarez has beaten the odds, and I’ve got a feeling Evil Dead is going to be a big hit for Sony at the box office this weekend. Alvarez has already spoken of a sequel on the cards, which will be 100% original, and so this weekend is promising to be the franchise-starter that will no doubt continue for years to come. Raimi’s 1981 horror spawned two sequels, and it should be interesting to see if Alvarez takes things further down the line.
The original role of Ash, played by Bruce Campbell, has been translated for Jane Levy in the female lead, starring instead as Mia. And if the trailers we’ve seen so far are anything to go by, this is definitely the horror film to beat this year, along with the remake of Carrie.
N.B. This trailer is entirely unsuitable for work. Enjoy!
