It was 35 years ago that George Miller’s Max Mad left a massive impact on the action movie genre as a then 23 year old Mel Gibson took on a leading role in the desolate setting. Mad Max: Fury Road meanwhile will see the director head back to that world with a new story and cast led by The Dark Knight Rises’ Tom Hardy.

Hardy will this time be the one who takes on the title role, and he’ll be joined by Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough, Zoe Kravitz, Courtney Eaton, Rosei Huntington-Whiteley, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones, and Abbey Lee Kershaw. After years of delays, it’s currently set to be released on May 15th, 2015.

Mad Max: Fury Road offers post-apocalyptic action set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order.

There’s Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

Below are two new Empire Magazine covers offering a new look at Tom Hardy as this movie’s Mad Max.
