One of the most actors in Hollywood, Tom Hanks may be working the publicity at the Toronto Film Festival for ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood’ but the ‘Toy Story 4’ actor has signed up to star in the Mattel adaptation of ‘Major Matt Mason’.

Akiva Goldsman, who previously worked with Hanks on ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘Angels & Demons,’ will adapt the script from a short story about the character from Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon.

Mason is an astronaut who lives and works on the moon and deals with both a space crew and various alien allies and villains.

When introduced in 1966, the figures were initially based on design information found in Life Magazine, Air Force Magazine, Jane’s, and other aviation- and space-interest periodicals. Later, the line attempted to transition into the realm of science fiction.

This isn’t the first time Hanks has been linked with the Toy character, back in 2011 Graham Yost and Hanks were said to have written a script for a 3D CG animated version of the series. The feature failed to get off the ground.

Hanks was last heard after he returned to voice the character of Woody in ‘Toy Story 4’, his previous onscreen role was in Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Post’ opposite Meryl Streep. His upcoming actor gigs include ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood’, ‘Greyhound’ opposite Elisabeth Shuh, Paul Greengrass’s ‘News of the World’ and an untitled Elvis Presley project in which he will play Elvis’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
