Before Tom Cruise became the all-action, running man we all know him for today, he took the lead in this little picture called Top Gun which went on to become a major classic from the 80’s and really can be put down to catapulting Cruise’s career into the stratosphere. So fans rejoice, Tom Cruise has finally confirmed a return for Maverick as Top Gun 2 has been confirmed.

Laying to rest the rumours that have been circulating for some time, the sequel has yet to find someone to take the helm, At one point Tony Scott, who directed the original, was set to take the driver’s seat, but with his death in 2012 the vacancy has been wide open. Could Cruise himself take a seat behind the camera as well as in front?
The original story focused on hotshot pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise) who was a trainee pilot at The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanour put him at odds with the other pilots, especially the cool and collected Iceman (Val Kilmer). But Maverick wasn’t only competing to be the top fighter pilot, he’s also fighting for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).
Justin Marks penning the screenplay which will be set in contemporary times and involve ‘drone technology and fifth generation fighters’ along with exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots who are being rendered obsolete.
With the reputation sequels have, tending to be sub-par to their predecessor, we wholeheartedly hope they nail this one.
