The news that the royal cast of Netflix’s The Crown to portray older versions of the British Royal family has been a hot topic over the last few months. Claire Foy has already been replaced by Olivia Colman taking over the role of Elizabeth but the question is who could possibly step into the shoes of Matt Smith as Prince Philip? Well, now we have the answer, Outlander and Game of Thrones star Tobias Menzies.

Back in January, it was reported that Paul Bettany was in talks to take over the role but that all seems to have been for nothing. It was also rumoured that Michael Sheen and David Tennant were also in line for the role.

The next phase of life behind palace walls will see the Royal Family age and Helena Bonham Carter has already signed up to play Princess Margaret, replacing Vanessa Kirby.

The plan is to have the period drama run for six seasons following the Queen’s story throughout her whole life – each season representing a decade. As a result, the plan has always been to shake up the casting every two seasons with older actors taking on the roles.

Menzies played Brutus in BBC historical epic Rome, Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones, and also popped up in Black Mirror and Catastrophe. Menzies will next be seen in brand new horror series The Terror which is produced by Ridley Scott. He will also be seen in the TV adaptation of King Lear alongside Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.
