Tina-FeyThe Muppets 2 is due to begin production at the end of the month, and we’ve been hearing some brilliant casting news over the past few months. Just before Christmas, it was announced that Ricky Gervais was in talks to take the leading role, akin to Jason Segel’s in the 2011 original.

And now THR are reporting that Tina Fey, whose career has soared to new heights since creating and starring in 30 Rock, is in late-stage negotiations to star alongside Gervais and Modern Family’s brilliant Ty Burrell.

As reported last month, the film features three human leads, and just as we expected, the third one is indeed a female, and Fey seems like the perfect choice for the comedy sequel.

The original film took just shy of $160m. at the box office, and talk of a sequel has been strong ever since.

Director James Bobin is back in the director’s chair once more for Disney, directing from a script he co-wrote with Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets).

And as we all hoped he would be, Bret McKenzie, the Oscar-winning singer-songwriter behind the first film’s music, has been writing new music for the sequel, and we can’t wait to hear how it sounds.

The plot is currently being kept under wraps, but we do know that Burrell’s character is set to be a lazy Interpol agent, and Fey’s character is reportedly set to be a Russian gulag prison guard. Awesome.

The Muppets sequel, which is currently without a title, is expected to begin production later this month, and is set to shoot at Pinewood Studios here in the UK. More as we get it.
