The-Uncle-Ruckus-MovieIt’s no secret that recent years have transformed the way movies are both made and seen, and Kickstarter and a number of similar sites have become an increasingly successful path for both filmmakers and audiences to take. Thus we have Aaron McGruder’s campaign to make The Uncle Ruckus Movie.

If you’ve seen McGruder’s brilliant animated series, The Boondocks, you’ll know full well who Uncle Ruckus (no relation) is. And if you’re as big a fan of the series as I am, then you’ll no doubt also be very interested in the possibility of him getting his own live-action movie.

McGruder has set up a project on Kickstarter to raise 0,000 to help fund The Uncle Ruckus Movie. The project notes that this figure reflects the partial funding, which will then help them continue to secure the rest of the money needed to make the film.

And if, for any reason, this doesn’t then happen, they will make instead a mockumentary, Uncle Ruckus Saves America, and so we’ll be getting a film one way or another.

But provided it all goes smoothly, The Uncle Ruckus Movie sounds brilliant. McGruder will be directing himself, from a script that he is currently writing. And Gary Anthony Williams, who voices the role on the series, will be playing his live-action counterpart.

No word yet on any plot details, but we do know that our other beloved characters from The Boondocks won’t be making an appearance.

“The story, which is currently being written, will not involve any of the other regular BOONDOCKS characters, but rather explore a part of the Ruckus family not seen in the show.”

From McGruder himself:

“There’s always been interest in a live-action Boondocks movie, which to me was out of the question considering Huey and Riley are essentially impossible to cast. The animated feature would cost around 20 million, but a live action Uncle Ruckus movie could cost a fraction of that. So just for the hell of it we had the costume made and it was pretty amazing. To see Gary actually transform into Uncle Ruckus… it’s quite the surreal experience.  I never expected the transition to be so completely seamless.”

As with all Kickstarter projects, there are various levels at which you can pledge, each named “after great white Americans.” Pledging begins at just $1 (you can donate from anywhere in the world, at your equivalent exchange rate), and the best package for most of us will be the Clint Eastwood pledge. For $25 (plus $10 international shipping), you get yourself the Uncle Ruckus Movie DVD, a backer button, as well as digital downloads of original tracks written and recorded by Uncle Ruckus, and a digital photo of him.

Pledging goes all the way up to $10,000 or more, classed at the Ronald Reagan level. This will give you a co-producer credit on the film, allow you to appear in the movie, get premiere tickets, a signed script, the DVD, and a whole lot more!

The project’s funding will finish on 1st March on Kickstarter, so make sure to get your pledges in well before that time. I will personally be going for the Clint Eastwood package, or maybe the J. Edgar Hoover or the John Wayne – Bag o’ Ruckus if my finances can afford it. I thoroughly encourage you to do the same.

And if you don’t already, look into watching The Boondocks at your nearest possible convenience. It is by far one of the best animated programmes of all time. Here’s a glimpse of what to expect from The Uncle Ruckus Movie. Enjoy.

And to give you an idea of what to expect, here’s Gary Anthony Williams transformed into the live-action version of Uncle Ruckus, himself.
