There is another 80’s film due to receive the remake treatment, although this one is probably not as obvious a choice to the batch we’ve witnessed so far this year.

Deadline are reporting that a new version of Troma classic The Toxic Avenger is currently in development.

It’s been touted as an environmentally-conscious action-comedy and director Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) has been quoted as saying “The Toxic Avenger is exactly what the country–wait, that’s not big enough–what the world needs right now.”

Looks like the makers are aiming for a broad audience with this one. The original material however, couldn’t have been further from the mainstream, and was essentially a trashy exploitation film about a social misfit called Melvin who exacts revenge on his bullies and tormentors after accidentally falling into some barrels with toxic material.

It did manage to spawn four sequels, a comic book and a kid’s animated TV series too, so it’s been gradually watered-down through its various incarnations anyway.
