In the latest news of studios not listening to audiences, Warner Bros are to go ahead and give Jared Leto’s The Joker – from Suicide Squad – his very own stand-alone movie.

The studio are also developing another Joker production which is stated as being very different from Leto’s Joker. It is to focus on the Gotham villain’s origin story and has The Hangover’s Todd Phillips connected as director and Martin Scorsese as executive producer. Joaquin Phoenix is also set to star as The Joker.

Leto’s The Joker, which he stars and serves as executive producer, looks set to be in the same world as the DCEU whilst Phoenix’s take will be under a different banner at Warner.

Warner Bros. currently has in development a Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off which has been described as a “criminal love story,” according to one source, featuring the two lunatic killers who are cornerstones in the Batman mythos. One insider offered this: “an insane and twisted love story. When Harry Met Sally on Benzedrine.”

Harley Quinn is also set to get her own adult animated series for the DC-branded direct to consumer digital platform. Consisting of 26 episodes, the adult animated action comedy series that will be penned by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey who all served as executive producers on Powerless.

It will be quite some time before the movie, which nobody wants, will hit the big screen. Leto and the studio team are now looking for a writer for the project. Suicide Squad 2 is set for a release in 2019.
