The Holdovers is a charming movie by Alexander Payne that straddles the line between comedy and drama with a deft precision, and the results are truly heartwarming. To mark the film’s release we had the immense pleasure in speaking to two of the film’s leads, Paul Giamatti & Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

The two turn in stunning displays, and are very much at the forefront of the Oscar campaign, as this film has been an integral part of the awards season so far. They discuss that added element to their experience, as well as speaking about the tricky tonality of the film, as well as Giamatti’s ability to improvise (resulting in perhaps the film’s funniest moment). They also talk about teachers, Payne – and of course after Giamatti’s now iconic In ‘N Out burger photo after the Golden Globes, we even direct the conversation over to burgers.

He soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and with the school’s head cook, a woman who just lost a son in the Vietnam War.
