Lindsay-Lohan-in-The-CanyonsArriving in cinemas and on VOD in the US early next month, Paul Shrader’s The Canyons is sure to be somewhat divisive when it lands.

Lindsay Lohan and (porn star) James Deen lead the film, and IFC have released the first ‘proper’ trailer ahead of its release next month, via Apple, along with a handful of NSFW images in the new issue of FilmComment, via Collider.

It gives us a much better look at the film’s feel, over the previous parody trailers. And you can’t help but feel that the film will, at the very least, gain some form of cult status, regardless of its reception amongst critics.

THE CANYONS is a contemporary L.A. noir from director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition, both personally and professionally, among a group of young people in their 20’s and how one chance meeting connected to the past unravels all of their lives, resulting in deceit, paranoia, cruel mind games and ultimately violence.

While calculating young movie producer Christian (Deen) makes films to keep his trust fund intact, his actress girlfriend, Tara (Lohan), hides an affair with an actor from her past. But Christian becomes aware of her infidelity, which leads the young Angelenos into a violent, sexually-charged tour through the dark side of human nature

Nolan Gerard Funk, Amanda Brooks, and Gus Van Sant complete the cast alongside the leading duo.

Shrader (Taxi Driver, American Gigolo) is directing from a script written by American Psycho’s Bret Easton Ellis.

The Canyons will be released in cinemas and on VOD on August 2nd in the US. No word on a UK release date, and I imagine this might well be one we’ll have to wait for on DVD, given its independent nature. For now, here’s the new trailer, along with a reminder that the images below are highly unsuitable for work, featuring full frontal nudity.
