3. The Drugging – The Big Lebowski (1998)
Perhaps the pair’s ultimate cult film; the zany, drug-fuelled and utterly insane antics that ensue in the 1998 bowling crime caper is why so many revisit, and undoubtedly amongst the most madly bizarre sequences is when Jeff Bridges’ The Dude is drugged whilst attending a porn baron’s party.
Soon the slurring detective ascends into an unshakable haze which screens as a lavish and hilariously staged musical number recalling the MGM musical era and has all the hallmarks of a Busby Berkeley production. The song offers sensational costume, as well as effortless camera angles and lighting, but the star of the show is the hybrid content; bowling and beautiful women – The Dude’s two most cherished fascinations.
There aren’t many movies which can offer a scene as utterly bonkers as this without losing any of the previous momentum built, but moments like this is what keeps The Big Lebowski alive and painstakingly original.
