The Hudsucker Proxy

9. The Jump – The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

Playing well with the ‘fourth wall’ is something only a small band of filmmakers can achieve accurately and intelligently, but thankfully the Coens fall into this bracket. As their art deco fairy tale ascends to its finale, the audience stand with a greatly distraught Norville as he prepares to take his own life by jumping from the Hudsucker Skyscraper.

Our hero takes the leap, but as he begins his journey down to death, a fatherly guardian angel appears who freezes time and rewinds the story to offer the spectator a happy climax to the story. To do this in a picture out of such a genre would be a taboo, but here it screens supremely.
