Fargo

8. The Kidnapping – Fargo (1996)

For my money Fargo is the Coens’ finest film overall and fewer moments offer as much hilarity and equal horror than when Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare’s clumsy crooks break in and clatter their way to bagging a hostage.

The sequence plays out with slapstick realism as the brothers are able to pen and shoot a scene with as much fun and glee as possible whilst still maintaining an aura of dread and terror. The dialogue here – much like the rest of the film – is ingenious and the play between our kidnappers is staged with sure-footed accuracy.
