At the end of Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers left behind the shield after his battle with Iron Man and was then seen breaking out his fellow Avengers while decked out in a fairly nondescript costume. Did all that mean we won’t see the hero as Captain America when he returns in Infinity War a couple of years from now? According to the Russo Brothers, yes!

“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” Joe confirmed when asked about what’s next for the patriotic superhero. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly, the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

That makes sense, though it’s hard to imagine Chris Evans not once again wielding the shield at some point during the battle with Thanos. Chances are though that that’s a moment Marvel will make us wait for, and while Avengers 4 is no longer Infinity War – Part 2, it could be that they’ll hold off his “return” until that movie in order to make it really matter.

Looking at the comic books, Steve could take on his Nomad persona or more likely that of the Super Soldier (whose costume inspired the navy blue version we saw in The Winter Soldier). We’ll just have to wait and see, but it will be interesting to see what’s next for Cap!
