Rob-Brydon-and-Steve-Coogan-in-The-Trip-to-ItalyThe perfect way to finish off the week? More impressions of Michael Caine by Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan in their upcoming comedy film, The Trip to Italy.

Brydon and Coogan made their uncanny impressions of the legendary actor known in Michael Winterbottom’s 2010 BBC series, The Trip. And now the duo has returned for take two in the feature-length film sequel, rather than another six-episode run.

This time around, talk soon turns to Caine’s performance in Christopher Nolan’s epic franchise-concluder, The Dark Knight Rises, focusing in on his teary moments when he tells Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne / Batman that he won’t bury another member of the Wayne family.

Michael Winterbottom’s largely improvised 2010 film, The Trip, took comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon—or semifictionalized versions thereof—on a restaurant tour around northern England. In this witty and incisive follow-up, Winterbottom reunites the pair for a new culinary road trip, retracing the steps of the Romantic poets’ grand tour of Italy and indulging in some sparkling banter and impersonation-offs. Rewhetting our palates from the earlier film, the characters enjoy mouthwatering meals in gorgeous settings from Liguria to Capri while riffing on subjects as varied as Batman’s vocal register, the artistic merits of “Jagged Little Pill,” and, of course, the virtue of sequels.

Whilst their impressions of Bale as Batman and Tom Hardy as Bane need some more work, their takes on Caine – Brydon in particular – are almost unbelievable.

The Trip to Italy will be broadcast on the BBC later this year, with IFC giving the comedy sequel a theatrical release stateside.
