There have been rumours (we mean even more rumours than usual) that Lucasfilm were planning on announcing some Star Wars news shortly. That news has now arrived: Star Wars Episode VII will be released on the 18th of December 2015. It not only avoids the increasingly crowded Summer Blockbuster season for that year but it allows for the delays to the pre-production to not affect the film too drastically. Delays? Oh, yes…

While JJ Abrams talks up the recent change on the screenwriting staff Disney chairman Alan Horn leapt to the rooftops of the internet to declare:

We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,

So now we all get a bit of an early Christmas present but it’s a worrying trend when release dates are set for films which have no finished script. There is, as of right now, no UK release date indicated. Nor that the 18th of December is a worldwide release date. Given Disney’s month long delays in the past for some of their films it’s a possibility that this date is US only. Shooting begins early next year – right here in Pinewood.
