George Lucas’ re-released 3D version of Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace has just about managed to push the movie over the edge to make it the eleventh movie to join the billionaire club according to THR with the total now standing at $1,000.4bn. The movie, which was originally released in 1999 has brought in an extra $73.4m worldwide to push it past that one billion dollar mark which will no doubt have brought a smile to Mr. Lucas’ face.

THR go on to say that the movie is now only $1.5m behind that of The Dark Knight Rises which will put Star Wars Phantom Menace into the number 10 spot in the next few days.

All these stats are slightly skewed however since I believe (someone please correct me if I’m wrong) Phantom Menace has now been re-released into cinemas 3 times. I’m pretty sure that if The Dark Knight was post converted into 3D, it would smash it at the box office because that film is actually good! Not sure if that’s a good idea though. Thoughts?

Here’s the full list of movies in the billionaire club. Going forward, we’re going to see an awful lot more big budget movies heading into the list with inflation. Still, no one has ever come close to James Cameron’s Avatar which brought in a whopping $2.8bn!

  1. Avatar ($2.8bn)
  2. Titanic ($1.8bn)
  3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2  ($1.32bn)
  4. Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($1.12bn)
  5. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King(1.12bn)
  6. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.009bn)
  7. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.07bn)
  8. Toy Story 3 ($1.06bn)
  9. Alice in Wonderland ($1.02bn)
  10. The Dark Knight ($1.002bn)
  11. Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace ($1,000.4bn at the time of writing)
