The TV adaptation of Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer has been given the go-ahead at TNT with Jennifer Connelly heading up the cast.

The recent movie adaptation by Bong Joon Ho’s 2013 film starred  Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Go Ah-sung, John Hurt, and Ed Harris. IT is a remarkable film and, astonishingly, has never been released in the UK.

The movie takes place aboard the globe-spanning Snowpiercer train which holds the last remnants of humanity after an attempt at climate engineering in order to stop global warming has unintentionally created a new ice age.

Set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, the series will focus on the remnants of humanity, who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually-moving train that circles the globe. As it does, issues of class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival are raised.

Daveed Diggs, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Benjamin Haigh, Sasha Frolova, Katie McGuinness, Alison Wright, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand, and Lena Hall will all join Connelly on the cast of the series.

Executive Vice President of Original Programming at TNT said “I’m a personal fan of Bong Joon Ho’s epic film and jumped at the chance to honour his original vision, yet expand upon the world and characters with a diverse, award-winning cast”, She went on to state “Science fiction is the perfect genre to examine issues of race, class, gender and natural resources with thought-provoking and exciting storytelling. Snowpiercer will explore those relevant issues while embarking on a wild, action-filled ride.”

The pilot for the series was directed by Scott Derrickson from a screenplay written by Josh Friedman. The series is executive produced by Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, and the original film’s Bong Joon Ho, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun and Dooho Choi.
