Idris Elba is one of the most charismatic actors around. He flies the flag for not only British talent on our screens, but for black actors, too; oozing talent and charm into equally huge buckets, he’s gone consistently from strength to strength, never letting the ball drop when it comes to great performances (even if a couple of the movies he’s been in haven’t lived up to his own star quality).

There’s something for everyone in each of Elba’s roles: there’s the tall, handsome gentleman, or the devilishly cool action hero, or the character actor with effortless range.

His latest film, No Good Deed, sees him play Colin – an escaped convict – who infiltrates the home of a caring stranger, unwitting of his dangerous nature but fully convinced by his charm. It’s another fantastic turn from this increasingly reliable actor – and who knows, we might see him play Bond eventually.

Here are six other great roles.

Luther

Luther

Where better to start than Elba’s calling card, Luther? Starring as the eponymous detective in this hit UK crime show, Luther must make tough calls during his time as Detective Chief Inspector, uncovering the most heinous crimes imaginable in a city that has no sense of right and wrong.

In a somewhat rare opportunity for Elba to keep his natural London-born accent, Luther’s grizzled cop gives the otherwise straightforward (and sometimes silly) series a hefty psychological depth, breathing life into the often ridiculous dialogue. ‘I love to talk about nothing. It’s the only thing I know anything about’; only Elba could deliver that line, and make it sound brilliant
