Over the weekend, David Fincher will be testing “up to six” actresses to play Lisbeth Salander in Sony Pictures’ The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The actresses will wear test in full costume, make-up, hair, piercings and read their lines opposite Daniel Craig, who has already been cast in the role of Mikael Blomkvist.

Deadline are guessing it’ll be any six of these eight: Katie Jarvis (Fish Tank), Ellen Page (Inception), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Sophie Lowe (Blame), Rooney Mara (The Social Network), Sara Snook (Sleeping Beauty) and Lea Seydoux (Robin Hood).

The list of actresses is similar to one we posted not so long ago, with the addition of Katie Jarvis, and Ellen Page throwing herself back into the race, having submitted her own screen-test video to Fincher. Not all of the eight above will test this weekend, but it’s a step in the right direction of an official announcement regarding casting being made in the not too distant future.

It’s certainly shaping up to be an interesting search though, with actresses almost queuing up to take on the coveted role Noomi Rapace played so exquisitely in the Swedish original. This may well a once-in-a-lifetime role for whichever budding young actress eventually nabs the part. It’s not every day there’s a Hollywood film with such a strong emphasis on a headstrong and powerful female character.

If you aren’t aware of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, you can read the synopsis below:

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger’s are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Sony Pictures have already set a release date of December 21, 2011 for Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, with shooting expected to begin in the early Autumn. This doesn’t give Fincher long to pick his Lisbeth Salander.
