It was reported last year that Quentin Tarantino had been in discussions with J. J. Abrams about an idea he had for a new Star Trek film. This news quickly spun itself around the foothills of Hollywood and though there was no official word about the project it was assumed it would be a typical R-Rated Tarantino affair with language and explosive violence to match.

Given the perhaps unfair reaction to the latest big screen slice of Trek, and the success of Netflix’s Star Trek Discovery (which itself used Tarantino’s favoured F-word), it’s not surprising that new approaches are being considered. Tarantino may not seem like an obvious choice to offer up an idea for a new Star Trek Film it nonetheless got many people excited.

Yesterday as part of the Empire Awards in London we had the chance to speak to Star Trek’s Scotty, and all round lovely guy Simon Pegg who gave us a little more background to the whole Tarantino Trek affair

He said:

“I don’t think [Quentin Tarantino] has written an R rated Star Trek script. I think what happened is, he went to J.J. with an idea that he’s had for a while. I remember he told us about it a long time ago. I think he told me and Edgar [Wright] about it a long time ago. He just put it to J.J. and I think J.J.’s just considering putting it into a writing room.

We got an email saying ‘Guess what? Guess who came into the office the other day?’ I don’t know much about it other than it’s in the mix, so we’ll see.”

It’s a fascinating prospect and one that, should it ever see the light of day, would offer Trekkers and non-Trekkers alike a bold new world to explore.
