With filming well underway on the DC comic adaptation of Shazam, New Line Cinema has revealed an official synopsis and a few cast names for the feature.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam already had a few names bandied around which have now been confirmed. The first with Mark Strong as the film’s villain Dr Thaddeus Sivana. However, a name that had been rumoured to appear for a cameo spot, Henry Cavill, doesn’t make an appearance. Dwayne Johnson is also only listed as an executive producer.

The cast members that have been revealed are those that make up the Foster family of Billy Batson. Jack Dylan Grazer will play Freddy, Grace Fulton will play Mary, Faithe Herman will play Darla, Ian Chen will play Eugene, and Jovan Armand will play Pedro. Cooper Andrews and Marta Milans will feature as Billy’s foster parents, Victor and Rosa Vasquez, and Ron Cephas Jones as the Wizard.

The official synopsis reads;

“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word – SHAZAM! – this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard.

Still, a kid at heart – inside a ripped, godlike body – Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test?

Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).”

Filming is currently underway in Toronto, the film is scheduled for release in April 2019.
