Following the news that Sam Raimi was offered the director’s chair for Disney’s prequely return to the Emerald City, Oz, The Great and Powerful, Deadline are now confirming it for us.

Now that we know how well Tim Burton’s Alice did in box office terms on her return to Wonderland there will be a huge amount of financial, if not critical, expectation for Raimi’s film, which one assumes will also be in 3D.

No confirmation on the rumoured casting of Robert Downey Jr. but you can bet that Disney will want someone similar to Johnny Depp to plaster all over the artwork (is it only me who thinks it’s odd that the DVD and Blu-ray artwork for Alice in Wonderland has no Alice or Wonderland on it?).

Here’s Deadline’s take on the story,

Downey would play the Wizard Of Oz before he became the Wizard Of Oz circa the 1939 iconic film: he’s in fact a circus wrangler transported by tornado to the mysterious world of Oz where he gets mistaken for a know-it-all.
