According to rumour, Russell Brand is the latest star hoping to get involved with Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages, a screen adaptation of the stage musical set for production at New Line.

Brand, who previously worked with Shankman on Bedtime Stories, has reportedly taken a liking to the role of Lonnie, who runs an ’80s rock club for owner Dennis (a part currently being circled by Alec Baldwin).

Scripted originally by the musical’s book writer, Chris D’Arienzo, and receiving rewrites from Little Miss Sunshine Oscar winner Michael Arndt, buzz around the film is currently on a high, with news suggesting that Tom Cruise will soon be confirmed to play rock star Stacee Jax.

Following on from his work in surprise flop The Tempest with Helen Mirren and Alfred Molina, this could prove to be Brand’s highest profile project yet. But although the comedian played the part of Lothario rocker Aldous Snow in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek, will his pipes have what it takes to carry a duet of REO Speedwagon’s Can’t Fight This Feeling with Alec Baldwin? Only time will tell.

Deadline had the story.
