Sad news tonight as 2016 claims another….. News has come in that actor Robert Vaughn has died aged 83 after battling with acute leukaemia. Vaughn is probably best known for his role in the 60s TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E (the film version starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander released last year) for four years and 105 episodes but Vaughn also starred in numerous Hollywood blockbusters as well as numerous other TV shows.

By far and away his stand-out performance for me personally was in the 1974 mega smash action movie The Towering Inferno in which Vaughn starred alongside Hollywood’s elite of the era including Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway, Robert Wagner, Richard Chamberlain and even Fred Astaire. He also appeared in the 1960 film The Magnificent Seven, another that has been remade and released in 2016 (starring Denzel Washington) and Bullitt again with McQueen in 1968.

The Towering Inferno Movie Trailer

Just looking at his IMDb page shows you how the man loved his craft, with title after title filled to the brim with Hollywood’s a-list. Vaughn worked right up until his death in The American Side but speaking with many people about him, everyone has a different movie that they loved him in with many citing Superman III in 1983 where he played Ross Webster. Rather amusingly for British readers Vaughn appeared in Coronation Street in 2012 for 13 episodes after moving to British to film the show Hustle.

Vaughn was true acting royalty and it’s no wonder that so many of Hollywood’s best are paying tribute to him. RIP Robert, you shall be very much missed….. thank you for leaving behind so many amazing memories on screen for us to share.
