We’ve known for a while that Harley Quinn would be getting a solo spinoff following the release of Suicide Squad, but that movie is now one step closer to becoming a reality.

According to the The Wrap, Christina Hodson has signed up to pen the screenplay which looks set to focus not just on Harley Quinn, but a number of other female heroes and villains too.

In the comics, they’re a team known as the Birds of Prey. Made up of characters like Batgirl, Black Canary, Poison Ivy, and yes, Harley Quinn, fans have been hoping to see them reach the big screen for a number of years now. Unfortunately, the studio has not yet found a director or set a release date for the movie, so it’s clearly still fairly early days for this one.

Hodson has appeared on the Black List three times in the past four years and recently penned a reboot of The Fugitive for Warner Bros. She’s also written a Bumblebee solo outing for Paramount Pictures, the first of their planned Transformers spinoffs now on the way.

Suicide Squad didn’t fare well with critics, but it was a box office hit and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was widely praised as a breakout character. It makes sense then that she’s getting her own movie, and we’ll hopefully hear more on this one in the coming months.
