Robert Downey Jr. and Matt Damon have joined the growing cast list for Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer.’

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book ‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer’, the film is said to be focused on the development of the atomic bomb and would see Blunt reunite with her A Quiet Place II co-star Cillian Murphy.

Downey Jr. and Damon – whose roles are undisclosed – join Cillian Murphy who takes on the title role of J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt is expected to play his wife the American physicist who was pivotal in the Manhattan Project.

Cillian Murphy and Nolan have a long-standing working relationship, the pair have worked together on a number of films including Batman Begins, Inception and Dunkirk. This would be Blunt and Nolan’s first collaboration.

The pic would be Nolan’s first in nearly two decades that hasn’t been made with Warner Bros. Universal Pictures won a bidding war against many of the other big studios to make this part of their slate. Nolan’s relationship with Warner Bros took a turn for the worse with the release of ‘Tenet’ and Warner’s decision to release its entire 2021 film slate simultaneously on HBO Max and in theatres.

‘Oppenheimer’ is scheduled to release in theatres on July 21, 2023, with Production due to commence in early 2022.
