We are two months away from Ridley Scott’s return to the Alienverse with Alien Covenant, the sequel to the prequel to his original Alien film. Confused? Things may be about to get more murky. Scott recently did an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald in which he confirms that there’s another Alien prequel film in the works. It’s been written already and there’s a chance that film will shoot as early as next year.

He talked eagerly about the reaction to 2012’s Prometheus, and how it spurred a new direction for Covenant, and possibly for what’s to come.

“What we did really well on Prometheus, considering that it was a ground zero idea that was starting all over again, was I discovered that people do have an appetite for the alien and what he means and his evolution – the egg, the facehugger, the chestburster as we call them.

“People still want to see it. So I return to a little bit of that but not wholeheartedly; there’s a lot in here which is new as well.”

It’s interesting that this was not already the leading propulsive element to Prometheus. The origin of the Alien was essential to the interest in the Alien prequel, however it didn’t drive the narrative as much as Scott is indicating it will do now.

“Now we’ve gone further than that. We go from Prometheus into both worlds of the original Alien and a little bit of Prometheus.”

“Prometheus was a good starting block to kick off the idea that no one ever asked in the sequels.”

Prometheus was about who and why? This is getting closer to who designed it and for what reason.”

It seems then that we’re being lead back to the beginning. Each new Alien film has the weight of the entire franchise on its shoulders. They also need to move their own story along, yet feed into the continuing reveal of the truth behind the beast. And more answers may be coming soon…

“If you really want a franchise, I can keep cranking it for another six.

“I’m not going to close it down again. No way…You’ve got to assume to a certain extent success and from that you’d better be ready…You don’t want a two-year gap. So I’ll be ready to go again next year.”

One wonders therefore if we’ll see more Alien prequels going into production right after the release of Covenant. The further though occurs that if this story is so important, does it need multiple films to tell it? We’ll see on the 19th of May when Alien Covenant will be released in cinemas around the world.
