Following the release of those pretty cool character posters, Lionsgate has today unleashed the first teaser trailer for their upcoming Power Rangers reboot. Surprisingly, there’s no sign of the team in action, the classic supporting characters (outside of the villainous Rita Repulsa), or even their gigantic Zords. Instead, this sheds some light on their origin story.

Honestly, it doesn’t look great. So far, they all appear to be stereotypical misfits, and while the movie seems to be striving for a tone similar to Chronicle – which this take on Power Rangers is pretty much ripping off in places – it’s clearly taking itself far too seriously.

Will that alienate fans of the cheesy and fun TV show? Possibly, though there’s a chance the reboot will embrace those elements when the team finally suit up in their Green Lantern-esqu CGI costumes. It could go either way, but it should be an interesting one to follow.

Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, and Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger. Rounding out the cast are Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa and Bryan Branston as Zordon. The movie is currently set to be released on March 24th, next year.
