So far, we’ve been teased with a first look at Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi in their futuristic suits, followed by two awesome teaser posters at the San Diego and New York Comic-Cons, and now it looks like we might have our first glimpse of one of del Toro’s giant robots, the Jaegers, in action.
A new reel for del Toro’s production company, Mirada, has debuted online, and clocking in at the 1:15 mark below comes what looks like a potential glimpse of a Jaeger. It looks like it could be pre-viz, rather than footage from the film itself, but it’s impressive either way.
“From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.”
Hunnam and Kikuchi star alongside a great cast, headed up by Idris Elba, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman, with del Toro directing from a script by Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans).
Pacific Rim will be released in 3D and IMAX theatres on 12th July, 2013, and we can’t wait for it to hit. It should be one of the best blockbusters of next year. For now, here’s what looks to be our first glimpse of one of del Toro’s Jaegers, coming in at the 1:15 mark.
