It was previously known that the Fantastic Four were not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the movie rights were owned by 20th Century Fox. Three films were produced with the characters, namely ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer,’ which were released in 2005 and 2007 respectively. The movies starred Ioan Gruffudd as Reed, Jessica Alba as Sue, Michael Chiklis as Ben and Chris Evans as Johnny before he played Captain America. Fox attempted to reboot the franchise in 2015 with Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Michael B. Jordan playing the respective roles.

Matt Shakman will direct from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. Filming is expected to begin by the summer.

Disney has swapped the release dates of ‘The Fantastic Four’ and ‘Thunderbolts’, with the former now set for July 25, 2025 and the latter for May 2, 2025 as part of the casting announcement.
