It may have an abysmal score of 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opened to $65 million this weekend at the North American box office, easily beating Guardians of the Galaxy (which took a respectable $41.5 million during its second weekend) to the #1 spot.

Whether these impressive numbers are a result of nostalgia from older viewers who grew up with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or kids who have seen them in cartoons and toy shop shelves is largely irrelevant; the fact is that as with Transformers, there’s clearly a demand there regardless of what critics think!

That could explain then why Paramount Pictures have decided to celebrate this news by announcing that a sequel will be released on June 3rd, 2016. Michael Bay will return to produce, and screenwriters Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec (Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocal) will return to pen the follow-up.

There’s currently no word on whether director Jonathan Liebsman will be back.

“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before,” said Adam Goodman, President of Paramount’s Film Group. “The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”

Of course, those of us outside of America still have some time to go before passing judgement on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It won’t be released in the UK for example until October!
